Target value = total × target weight
Each sleeve's target value = (total + new cash) × target weight; the adjustment is target − current. Positive means buy, negative means sell, and the deltas sum to the new cash exactly.
'Drift' is half the sum of |current − target| weights — equal to the share of the portfolio sitting above target, a one-glance measure of how badly rebalancing is needed.
Rebalancing with new money only
Add the cash you plan to invest and targets are computed on the enlarged total. All-positive deltas mean buying alone restores the mix; remaining negatives mean the overweight is too big for the new money and selling is still required.
Why it matters: sales can trigger fees and taxes and fight the 'let winners run' instinct; correcting with inflows is gentler but only as fast as the inflow is large relative to the portfolio.
Frequently asked
Must the target weights total 100?
Yes. The tool validates the sum and refuses to produce misleading deltas when it is over or under.
How many sleeves can I enter?
Three rows are prefilled (stocks, bonds, cash); press 'add another' for more — names are free text, e.g. gold or US equity. Each is treated by value and target weight.
Does a negative delta mean sell?
Yes — its absolute value is the sale amount; positives are buys. With no new cash, sells roughly equal buys: money moves inside the portfolio.
How often should I rebalance?
Common triggers are calendar-based (semi-annual/annual) or threshold-based (any sleeve drifting ~5 points off target). The tool computes amounts; timing is your call.
Deltas exclude transaction costs, taxes and redemption rules; weights use current market values. Estimates only, not investment advice.
